A Sister’s Special Bond with her Brother

My brother Lincoln is 20 years old, and I am 22. Growing up, I found it difficult to relate to my brother. It didn't seem like he was interested in having a relationship with me.

As I learned more about autism, I realized that our friendship would have to be different than I expected.

I started paying attention to his interests, like the video games he plays, books he reads, and tv shows he watches. I started asking questions, and he was happy to respond. He introduced me to the TV show The Last Airbender, and suddenly, we seemed to have a lot more in common. Now, we watch the reruns and make jokes about the characters all the time - it's about a brother and sister who help save the world.

Although I know how to talk to my brother and have fun with him, most people don't. They are unsure of what to say or how to approach him.

Autism acceptance, to me, means realizing that our relationship will not be like it is with other people in my life - but I can accept that it is unique, special, and rewarding.
